Keaton and Toni Jones were featured in this week’s 11 Burning Questions in the Stigler News Sentinel. Here are some of their bonus questions:

1. What’s a ring tone that you have on your cell phone?
Toni: Far Away by Nickelback.
Keaton: Tattoo by Jordan Sparks

2. What do you do in your free time?
Keaton: I’m usually on the computer, sleeping, or just doing something with my friends like playing Rock Band.
Toni: Sleep and eat. And hang out with my friends. I sleep a lot.

3. Who do you look up to?
Keaton: I look up to my mom, and I look up to upperclassmen that I played ball with. I still look up to them today, to see what they’re doing and how they’re living their lives.
Toni: There’s more than two, but the two that stand out have been Keaton and my cousin Sonya. I wanted to be just like them and do everything just like them and I pretty much did.

4. If a genie granted you three wishes, what would they be?
Toni: To skip high school and college and get right to my job, because I don’t like school. I want to be a dental hygienist.
Keaton: One would be to make the state tournament.

Chris Cole: Bonus Burning Questions

February 13, 2008
Chris Cole

This week, Chris Cole was featured in the Stigler News Sentinel’s newest sports addition, “11 Burning Questions.” Cole, who was named “Linebacker of the Year” is his district, recently signed a letter of intent to continue his football career at Southwestern College of Kansas. Pick up this week’s issue of the Sentinel for the feature, but for now, enjoy our bonus questions:

1. What aren’t you going to miss about Stigler when you go to college?

That’s hard to say. I’ve never really hated anything. I guess I’m not going to miss the really hot, harsh Oklahoma heat because from what I hear in Kansas, it doesn’t get half as bad.

2. What are you looking forward to in your final few months of high school?

Just graduating. Spending the last couple of months with my friends that are going to be here. It looks like I’m going to be the only from Stigler going to Southwestern. It’ll be a whole new set of friends, but I’m looking forward to finishing out here.

3. Besides football and school, what do you do in your free time?

I enjoy working at Charlie’s Chicken.

4. What’s your favorite childhood memory?

Whenever I was a freshman, we took a trip to Cancun. That was pretty fun.

5. What’s your favorite movie line?

“This is Sparta” from “300.”

Both Quinton teams move on to regionals

February 10, 2008

The boys prevailed in a nail-biter Friday night in their do-or-die district playoff game, beating Stuart 38-36.

“It was our best win of the season,” said senior Jerad Spencer, pictured above. Sophomore Garrett Williams and senior Tayler Reasnor led the Savages with 10 points each, while sophomore Cody Griffin contributed eight.

Although the boys lost their district championship game to Crowder, 46-35, they will move on to next weekend’s regional tournament.

The girls will also move onto regionals after dominating the Stuart Lady Hornets, 65-33. Quinton outscored Stuart 19-1 in the first quarter on their way to the comfortable win. Emily Lovell and Sally Simco led the Lady Savages with 18 and 17 points, respectively.

The girls were also unable to take home the district championship, though they did give No. 9 Crowder (20-4) quite a scare. Quinton came out firing, taking a seven-point lead into the half. But the Demonettes’ experience and talent was enough to overcome the deficit as they won, 51-48.

I’m glad our Stigler athlete didn’t try this…

February 8, 2008

Wednesday was “Letter of Intent Day” for high school senior athletes to indicate where they would be playing football in the fall. It’s a huge day, especially for the big DI schools who are looking to compete for a national championship.

Stigler’s very own Chris Cole took part in the festivities, as he signed his letter of intent to continue his career at Southwestern College in Kansas.

Luckily, he will actually be playing at the school he signed his letter of intent for. Unlike Kevin Hart.

This standout Nevada high school football player couldn’t handle the fact that no major DI program wanted him, so he just pretended that they did. But he didn’t let everyone else know that he was pretending. His hometown was so excited that he signed his letter of intent for Cal-Berkeley that they honored him in a ceremony and press conference in their high school gym. Hart went along with it. Unfortunately, diehard Cal fans saw the press conference, knew he wasn’t being recruited by their school, and outed him.

Yikes, some people just can’t let go of the dream. I mean, I have some (though not a lot of) sympathy. I mean, it was difficult for me to accept that I wasn’t going to be the next Michael Jordan. I mean, I probably won’t be… though there’s still time. All the similarities are there: we both got cut from our high school basketball team, we both grew up on the east coast… I’m sure there’s others, but you can see where this is heading.

Anyway, congrats to Cole. Pick up an issue of next week’s Stigler News Sentinel for more coverage on the story.

Lady Eagles dominate in bloodfest.

February 5, 2008

This is a new experiment for the local community. Because the Stigler News Sentinel only comes out once a week and people might want to get both timely sports news and a taste of what’s to come in the newspaper, I am going to post very brief recaps on this blog on the same night of the games I attend. If people enjoy this and I get good feedback, I will continue and increase this feature.

Both Kinta teams finished their regular seasons on a winning note, defeating Hanna on “Senior Night” Monday in Kinta.

The girls (12-7) played a fierce game that had two players bleeding by the middle of the first quarter, and several more bruised by the end of the game. Although Hanna came out swinging, the Lady Eagles were simply too much for them, easily winning 57-28. Whitney Watson led Kinta with 25 points, two off her season-high.

The boys (5-14) got a much-needed confidence boost heading into the district tournament with a win over Hanna, 58-49. They had taken a 12-point lead in the third quarter, but Hanna’s press defense frustrated the Eagles and cut their lead to three. But it wouldn’t be enough as the seniors made sure to win on their night. “It was senior night. We were going to win,” Kinta’s Cortez Fulson said simply.

Both the boys and girls teams will play in the first round of the district tournament this weekend. A win and they move on to regionals. A loss and their season is over.

For a full recap of both Kinta games, pick up an issue of the Stigler News Sentinel or the Country Star on Thursday.

Jasmin McCoy looks to pass in a physical contest on Monday night in Kinta.
